FALLING EMBERS (2020)

For vibraphone and crotales. Approximate duration: 6 minutes 30 seconds.

Falling Embers was originally composed as a meditation for peace and relief from the fires that raged across the Australian landscape in the summer of 2019-20. Tracing a glowing particle suspended above desolate land where all has been lost and destroyed, the piece explores the idea of the last moments of something - the final glow before life burns out. As the music evolved,  Falling Embers came to embody and represent something deeply personal and deeply tender taking place at the time of composing the work: the final moments - the final glow - of a very special relationship.

Falling Embers was composed for Claire Edwardes under commission by the 2020 Bowral Autumn Music Festival, which was postponed due to COVID-19.

COLOUR BURST (2017)

For unpitched percussion. Approximate duration: 6 minutes.

This piece was composed for Claire Edwardes in conjunction with the Sydney Conservatorium of Music’s inaugural National Women Composers’ Development Program (2016-17). The work was inspired by my experiences of being in the colourful and energetic city of Guanajuato, Central Mexico, in 2012. Here I was blown away by the vibrant atmosphere and culture that seemed to spill out onto every little corner, and the captivating rhythms that could be heard well into the night.

The premiere performance of this work took place in the Sydney Opera House Utzon Room on the 24th June 2018.

Oh, Sister.jpg

Oh, Sister (2016)

For solo cello. Approximate duration: 3 minutes 40 seconds.

This piece was composed for a workshop opportunity with cellist Georg Pedersen in conjunction with the Sydney Conservatorium of Music’s inaugural National Women Composers’ Development Program (2016-17). Oh, Sister communicates my deep despair towards watching my sister suffer the excruciating symptoms of chronic lyme disease. This disease is largely overlooked by health authorities in Australia and beyond, and thus there are often very few answers for those suffering so terribly. This piece is dedicated to all those individuals who persevere with strength and courage in the face of suffering. This piece is for my dear sister.

VERVE (2016)

For solo marimba. Approximate duration: 4 minutes 25 seconds.

I composed this work for Claire Edwardes in 2016 in conjunction with the Sydney Conservatorium of Music’s inaugural Composing Women's Program which took place from 2016-17. Whilst sketching the work, I pondered: “How much can be achieved with one simple idea?” This piece then came to be based on a series of small ostinato-like motifs and gestures that expand and grow as the music twists, turns and weaves through a variety of textural and harmonic landscapes. As Claire and I worked through a series of drafts together, there was a point where Claire laughed: “I need 6 hands to play this!” And so this piece now also exists in an expanded form as a work for symphony orchestra, titled FLIGHT.
